Historically, the pharmacologic treatment of bipolar depression has not been well studied. Newdata are beginning to emerge regarding the efficacy of new medications and the use of combinationsof mood stabilizers and antidepressants in acute and long-term treatment of bipolar depression. Wereviewed data from recent randomized, controlled trials of mood stabilizers and antidepressants in thetreatment of bipolar depression and naturalistic studies examining the risk of switching and depressiverelapse with ongoing antidepressant treatment.
