Clonidine-Induced Gynecomastia and Hyperprolactinemia in a 6-Year-Old Child

Sir: Clonidine, an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, has beenused in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).¹ Although there are several reports of gynecomastiaand hyperprolactinemia induced by antihypertensive agents,2 tomy knowledge there is no report of gynecomastia associatedwith clonidine treatment.

Case report. A 6-year-old boy presented in 2004 with a1-year history of hyperactivity, inattentiveness, irritability, andeasy distractibility. He fulfilled DSM-IV criteria for ADHD, forwhich treatment with methylphenidate, 20 mg/day was started,which led to no improvement. After 3 months, methylphenidatewas replaced by clonidine.’ ‹’ ‹
