Sir: In their report "The Incidence of Hyperglycemia in Patients Treated With Olanzapine," Misawa et al.¹ present very interesting but also very disturbing data on dysregulation of glucose metabolism associated with treatment of 2 atypical antipsychotics, olanzapine and quetiapine. I would like to comment on some aspects of their report. Misawa et al. report that within 10 months after the introduction of olanzapine in Japan, 9 schizophrenic patients were reported to have developed severe diabetes mellitus and diabetic coma, resulting in 2 deaths.’ ‹
