Sir: In their report "The Incidence of Hyperglycemia in Patients Treated With Olanzapine," Misawa et al.1 present very interesting but also very disturbing data on dysregulation of glucose metabolism associated with treatment of 2 atypical antipsychotics, olanzapine and quetiapine. I would like to comment on some aspects of their report. Misawa et al. report that within 10 months after the introduction of olanzapine in Japan, 9 schizophrenic patients were reported to have developed severe diabetes mellitus and diabetic coma, resulting in 2 deaths.’ ‹
