Article Abstract

From our regular book review column.

The treatment of alcohol abuse, along with other substancerelated illnesses, constitutes 25% of the U.S. national health care budget. More than 50% of incarcerated individuals have been estimated to have a significant alcohol and/or other substance use problem that contributed to their arrests, with unknown emotional and social costs. These and other substancerelated issues are highlighted by Marc A. Schuckit, M.D., in his text Drug and Alcohol Abuse: A Clinical Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment, 5th edition, and provide an appropriate emphasis for the importance of the subject matter.
