Increased Rate of Non-Right-Handedness in Patients With Bipolar Disorder

Sir: Non-right-handedness is more prevalent in subjectswith mental disorders (up to 28%) compared to the generalpopulation (8%-10%). Data on the association of non-righthandednessto bipolar disorder specifically are ambiguous,with data suggesting increased, similar, and decreased rates ofnon-right-handedness in those with bipolar disorder comparedto the general population. Putative differences in handednesscould yield insights into lateralized cerebral organization ordysfunction as a contributor to pathology in bipolar disorders.
