Article Abstract

From our regular book review column.

Individuals with serious mental illness often are overweight,
smoke, and receive minimal medical attention, all of which puts
them at risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Only
during the past decade, following the introduction of secondgeneration
antipsychotics, has there been significant attention
to these issues. In fact, the combination of such elements has
been a topic of study within internal medicine for many years
and was initially labeled "Syndrome X" by Gerald Reaven.
