Neuroleptic-induced movement disorders, or extrapyramidal side effects (EPS), can be classifiedinto acute and tardive syndromes. Among the former are parkinsonism, dystonia, and akathisia. Conventionalneuroleptics that have traditionally been used to treat psychiatric disorders are often associatedwith EPS. The newer atypical antipsychotics provide a more promising treatment strategy forpsychiatric disorders and have a lower potential for producing EPS than conventional neuroleptics.
