Autism emerged as a recognized pediatric neuropsychiatricdisorder in 1943 with the publication of Leo Kanner’s articleentitled "Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact" in a journalcalled Nervous Child. Kanner was the first Director of theChildren’s Psychiatric Service at Johns Hopkins under AdolfMeyer, and he lived until 1981 to see the "Kanner syndrome"gain worldwide attention.
